ALTERNATIVE FANTASY FOOTBALL GAMES FOR 2026, COMPARED
Bored of the same redraft league? Every major way to play fantasy football this season, what makes each different, and what each costs.
Season-long redraft is still the heart of fantasy football, but it isn't the only way to play any more. Here is every major format in 2026, what makes each one different, and what it costs. Full disclosure: we make ThrownZone, which is one of the options below. We've tried to describe every format fairly, including when ours isn't the right fit.
At a glance
| Format | Where to play | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Season-long redraft | ESPN, Yahoo, Sleeper, NFL Fantasy | Free | Leagues with friends |
| Dynasty and keeper | Sleeper, MyFantasyLeague | Mostly free | Long-term team builders |
| Best ball | Underdog, FFPC | Paid entry | Drafters who hate setting lineups |
| Guillotine | Guillotine Leagues | Varies | Weekly drama |
| Daily fantasy (DFS) | DraftKings, FanDuel | Paid entry; varies by state | Weekly lineup builders |
| Card games | ThrownZone, GameBlazers | Free to play | Collectors and weekly players |
Season-long redraft
The classic: draft in August, set a lineup every week, trade and pick up free agents, playoffs in December. ESPN and Yahoo are free and familiar; Sleeper is free with a social, chat-first app that many younger leagues prefer. Pick this if you want a season with the same group of people. Skip it if your team is out of contention by October and you're bored.
Dynasty and keeper leagues
Keep some or all of your players year to year, draft rookies, and trade future picks. Sleeper has strong dynasty tools; MyFantasyLeague offers the deepest customization for hardcore leagues. Pick this if you like thinking three seasons ahead.
Best ball
Draft once and never set a lineup again. Your best scorers each week are counted automatically. Underdog is the most popular home for best ball tournaments; FFPC runs higher-stakes versions. Entries cost real money. Pick this if you love drafting and hate weekly management.
Guillotine leagues
The lowest-scoring team each week is eliminated, and its players go into the free-agent pool for everyone else. Eighteen teams become one. Pick this if you want every week to feel like a playoff game.
Daily fantasy sports (DFS)
Build a new lineup under a salary cap for a single week, slate or game, and keep nothing afterwards. DraftKings and FanDuel are the largest. Contests have real-money entry fees and prizes, and legality varies by state. Pick this if you like weekly lineup puzzles and are comfortable with paid entry.
Fantasy football card games
The newest format: you own digital player cards and build weekly lineups from your collection. Cards have rarities and serial numbers, and you can open packs and trade. It's a mix of DFS-style weekly contests and season-long-style ownership.
- ThrownZone (ours) is free, with no real money at all: credits can't be bought or cashed out. Rarity decides which contests you can enter but never adds points, and ties go to the lowest serial number. New accounts start with 25 cards and 5,000 credits. How it works →
- GameBlazers is free to play for NFL and PGA Tour golf, with real-money prizes, freerolls and optional paid contests.
Pick this if you like collecting, want to play every week without drafting, or miss what card-based games like Reignmakers offered. Skip it if you only want one team with your friends; that's what season-long is for.
How to choose
- Want a league with friends? Season-long on ESPN, Yahoo or Sleeper.
- Want to plan years ahead? Dynasty.
- Want to draft and forget? Best ball.
- Want weekly lineups and don't mind paying? DFS, where it's legal for you.
- Want weekly lineups for free, plus a collection? A card game like ThrownZone.
You don't have to choose just one. Many players run a season-long league with friends and a weekly game on the side. Read how fantasy football card games work →
